NYC’s applications for fall 2027 open January 13 and close February 26, 2027 for both 3-K and Pre-K. Pre-K offers come out May 11; 3-K offers come out May 18. The two programs use different birth years, even though their application window is the same.
The 2027 application dates
These applications are for seats in the 2027–2028 school year. The January application and May offer happen before the child starts in the fall. NYC Public Schools has published both timelines in its Pre-K and 3-K admissions pages.
| Step | Pre-K | 3-K |
|---|---|---|
| Child’s birth year | 2023 | 2024 |
| Application opens | Wednesday, Jan 13, 2027 | Wednesday, Jan 13, 2027 |
| Application closes | Friday, Feb 26, 2027 | Friday, Feb 26, 2027 |
| Offers released | Tuesday, May 11, 2027 | Tuesday, May 18, 2027 |
A family applying for a four-year-old and a three-year-old can prepare both applications together. The older child’s offer arrives one week earlier, so one notification does not mean that both placements have been decided.
Which program matches my child’s birthday?
Use the calendar year of birth. A child born January 2, 2023 and a child born December 30, 2023 both belong in the fall 2027 Pre-K application group. The same rule puts all children born in 2024 in the 3-K group. A late-year birthday does not move a child into the following year’s application cycle.
This is NYC’s public early-childhood application process. It applies to children living in New York City; it is not a statewide deadline for every New York preschool. Families outside NYC use their own local enrollment arrangements.
Current enrollment in 3-K does not complete the next Pre-K application. To stay at the same center, list its Pre-K program and identify the child as a current student. That status can provide an admissions priority at the center; the application still has to be submitted.
Choose a seat that covers the hours you need
A site name alone does not tell you how much care the offer includes. One location can have different seat types. The School Day option suits a family that can cover afternoons and school vacations; year-round options address a longer daily care need and have their own eligibility rules.
| Seat type | Care provided | Who can use it |
|---|---|---|
| School Day | Free; 6 hours 20 minutes each school day, typically September–June | NYC children in the program’s birth-year group |
| Extended Day and Year | Free or low cost; up to 10 hours a day, including summer | Families meeting income and care-need requirements |
| City Transitional | Free; 8 or 10 hours a day, year-round | Admissions priority based on family income and needs |
For a parent working an eight-hour shift, a School Day seat leaves a daily gap even before travel time. Summer care is a separate gap. A free school-day placement therefore cannot, by itself, replace a full-year childcare arrangement.
An Extended Day and Year offer requires the family to establish childcare eligibility through MyCity. Selecting that seat type on the education application does not complete the childcare eligibility process. The offer and the care authorization are two separate tasks.
How to apply and rank programs
Apply through MySchools, by calling 718-935-2009, or through a Family Welcome Center. On the application, select the correct program at each location, including the seat type and any dual-language option.
Rank programs in the order you actually want them. The admissions process considers the choices, available seats and program priorities. A less-preferred location at the top can produce a less-preferred offer even when another listed option would have suited the family better.
Applications submitted within the window are considered through the admissions process; applying on the first morning does not create a first-come advantage. The useful work before February 26 is choosing a manageable trip, suitable care hours and the correct programs. The deadline matters because it is the last day to submit or revise those choices.
What to do when May offers arrive
The offer identifies the placement and provides acceptance and registration instructions. Receiving the offer and completing enrollment are separate steps.
An offer to a lower-ranked choice also puts the child on waitlists for choices ranked above it. NYC’s waitlist rules allow a family to accept the offered seat while remaining on those higher-choice waitlists. That preserves a real placement while another location may still have an opening.
For siblings, two offers at different sites can create a morning drop-off conflict. Compare the offered locations and care hours before building the fall work schedule. The shared application deadline does not promise shared placement at the same center.
If you missed the February 26 deadline
After offers and waitlists become available, families who missed the application deadline can join 3-K or Pre-K waitlists through MySchools. A waitlist is a request for an available seat. It does not itself provide a placement or a guaranteed offer.
For fall 2027, keep the four dates distinct: January 13 opens applications, February 26 closes them, May 11 brings Pre-K offers and May 18 brings 3-K offers. A year-round childcare application serves a different purpose from this fall admissions timeline.
Questions families ask
Does a Pre-K offer give my child a kindergarten place at that school later?
No. Pre-K and kindergarten use separate applications. A Pre-K placement completes the preschool admission process, not the later kindergarten application.
