These dates cover NYC public kindergarten admission. They are separate from the first day of school in September. Families applying for private or charter schools use those schools’ admission processes.
Which children apply for kindergarten in 2027?
NYC places children in kindergarten in the calendar year they turn five. For fall 2027, that means births from January 1 through December 31, 2022. A child with a December birthday starts that September while still four.
Families submit applications through MySchools, by phone at 718-935-2009 or through a Family Welcome Center. Submit one application per child. Applications received by January 22 receive the same consideration; applying on opening day does not improve admission priority.
Rank schools in the order you would choose them
NYC matches applicants using their choices, the seats available, admission priorities and each program’s admission method. Put the program you prefer first. The match works down the list to the highest choice the child qualifies for under those rules.
A nearby program may make daily pickup easier; another program may fit the family better for other reasons. That is a choice between schools, not a reason to reorder the list to chase an easier offer. A zoned program belongs on the application if the family wants it, at the position that reflects that preference.
For example, if a family prefers School A and wants its zoned School B as an option, listing A first and B second expresses that preference. Every listed program should be one the family could actually use: the trip to school and the afternoon pickup recur all year.
Gifted & Talented kindergarten uses this application too
Families can list Kindergarten Gifted & Talented programs on the same application. The December 9 opening, January 22 deadline and March 30 offer date apply to those choices too. Eligibility is determined after the application is submitted. The later application period for children entering higher grades is a different process.
What happens when an offer arrives?
The offer gives the deadline for accepting the seat and the registration steps. NYC has announced March 30 as the offer date; it has not announced a common 2027 acceptance deadline on the kindergarten timeline.
A child receiving a lower-ranked choice is automatically waitlisted for higher-ranked programs on the application. Accepting and registering for the offered seat preserves that place without harming the child’s chance of a waitlist offer. A place on a waitlist does not guarantee another offer.
Families who miss the application deadline join kindergarten waitlists when they open. That route works only when places open up after initial offers.
