Rome District Overview

The Rome City School District serves approximately 5,000 students in the city of Rome, Oneida County. Rome is historically significant as the site of Fort Stanwix, where the American flag was first flown in battle during the Revolutionary War.

The district operates 6 elementary schools, 1 middle school, and Rome Free Academy (RFA) — one of the oldest free public high schools in the United States (founded 1847). Rome is also home to the former Griffiss Air Force Base, now repurposed as the Griffiss Business and Technology Park housing Innovare Advancement Center.
